A Common Cause for Community: Joanne & Chuck Gibson

Joanne and Chuck Gibson lived in Concord for 53 years before moving to Newbury Court in August 2022. “The sense of community here is wonderful Joanne marvels.

That community spirit extends to charitable giving. “Our friends—people we admire—encour-aged us to join The 1889 Society,” says Chuck. “It’s become part of the culture here.”

“A lot of people have given in the past” notes Joanne. Their generosity made it possible for Newbury Court to go the extra mile and do what it felt was best during COVID. We’re fortunate to be able to contribute to help future residents.”

To join The 1889 Society, the Gibsons made Newbury Court one of several beneficiaries of a Charitable Remainder Trust they established back in the 1980s. “All we had to do was substi-tute Newbury Court for a previous beneficiary and complete a new beneficiary designation form,” explains Chuck. “It was easy.”

A Win-Win: Bo Grove

Bo and his late wife, Sidney, moved to Newbury Court from New Hampshire in 2015 to be closer to their children. They also needed to prepare for her journey with Parkinson’s Disease.

“Newbury Court did a great job managing the total environment for us,” says Bo. “The fact that it’s a non-profit organization means it can focus more on residents than on growing the bottom line. It needs resident philanthropy to continue that approach.”

Bo recalls, “When Amy asked if I would be willing to consider a planned gift, I told her, ‘It’s not my money. It’s my kids’.’ So I asked them if they wanted to support Newbury Court. To their credit, they said yes. We’re giving back a portion of the entry fee refund.”

Bo admits to being a little ambivalent initially about joining the 1889 Society Committee. Then he realized the role is more about encouraging others to give than making a hard sell. “I’m more than willing to share why I did it,” Bo explains. “If that helps someone decide to give, then it’s a win-win for everybody.”
