Spiritual Life Forever

Longtime Newbury Court resident Winifred (Winky) Bush made history and created the future simultaneously.

Her $2.9 million estate gift to New England Deaconess Association ranks as the largest ever received in our 135-year history. By using her gift to create the Winifred B. Bush and Walter M. Bush Spiritual Life Endowment Fund, Winifred has guaranteed that the Spiritual Life program will always be an integral part of life at Newbury Court.

“What an incredible blessing this is,” says Rev. Kristin Rinehimer, Director of Spiritual Life, “to know that Newbury Court will always have chaplains on staff, supported by proceeds of the Bush Endowment Fund. Our Spiritual Life program represents a holistic view of what it means to be an older adult—not just physical well-being.” The non-denominational initiative supports residents, family members, and staff of all faiths and backgrounds.

Winkie has left an indelible mark on Newbury Court through her philanthropy. In 2021, she honored her late husband with the Walter Bush Activity Room Rivercrest, a space dedicated to enriching the lives of our skilled nursing residents. With this gift from her estate, Winifred solidified her legacy as a compassionate advocate for the well-being of older adults.
