As part of an ongoing Resident Lecture Series at Newbury Court, nine-year resident Larry B. recently shared a two-part presentation titled Building Democracy: A South African Story,” inspired by a travel seminar he attended in 2024.
Larry’s journey took him from Cape Town to Johannesburg, with visits to Soweto, Pretoria, and the Pilanesberg Game Preserve, where he studied the country’s transition from apartheid to democracy. His presentation shared his insights, historical context, and travel stories with the community.
The trip also included unforgettable moments in nature. Larry visited Pilanesberg Game Preserve, located within the remains of a volcanic crater formed nearly two billion years ago. He shared photographs from a safari through the preserve, including sightings of lions, giraffes, zebras, leopards, and other wildlife.
The Resident Lecture Series has become a beloved program at Newbury Court, offering residents the chance to learn from one another’s travels, expertise, and life experiences.
Past lectures have featured Yuko H., who spoke about her memoir Arc and her experiences surviving the Hiroshima atomic bombing and later supporting her husband through ALS, as well as Anne U., a former helicopter pilot who shared photographs and stories from flying across the United States.
Larry’s presentation added another rich chapter to the series, giving neighbors a window into South Africa’s history and culture.
